The Present Crisis

This past Pentecost Sunday while our fellowship, like so many churches, celebrated the wondrous coming of the Holy Spirit, something truly dreadful was coming upon our nation. Anger and despair over another tragic death of an African-American man caused by police exploded across the nation.

I am reminded today of James Russell Lowell’s poem “The Present Crisis” about American slavery. Lowell (1819-1891) wrote the poem to address the controversy over slavery leading up to the Civil War. Now, I do not believe that every problem in our society or the African-American community is traceable to slavery, however, as a Christian, I do believe the roots of sin to which slavery can be traced are no different than the roots of all social evil that provokes such a crisis as we are in. Accordingly, the truth of Lowell’s poem rings true for me in our “present crisis” and is worth considering. Here is an excerpt:

“Of those Crises, God’s stern winnowers, from whose feet earth’s chaff must fly;

Never shows the choice momentous till the judgment hath passed by.

Careless seems the great Avenger; history’s pages but record

One death-grapple in the darkness ‘twixt old systems and the Word;

Truth forever on the scaffold, Wrong forever on the throne,—

Yet that scaffold sways the future, and, behind the dim unknown,

Standeth God within the shadow, keeping watch above His own.

We see dimly in the Present what is small and what is great,

Slow of faith how weak an arm may turn the iron helm of fate …”

We can have faith that God is in the shadow, keeping watch over what is happening in America. Our nation has been plunged into chaos. Our hearts go out to those who have suffered. We all pray for peace and justice and change. As for the evildoers in the shadows who have looted and plundered and trampled on the grief and sorrow and longing of so many for a better world, I am confident, they will not succeed to ruin the purposes of God’s redemptive plan. He will bring good out of this and justice to the earth. As Job says of Him, “I know no purpose of Your’s can be withheld from You (Job 42:2). We see it dimly now, as Lowell reminds us, but Almighty God is in the shadows of this, too, keeping watch over it all, working out His gracious purpose for humanity through Jesus Christ, our Lord. It cannot be withheld from Him! .

More Ministries

The Cantonese ministry continues to experience God’s guarding and protection during the pandemic, even though we have been unable to physically fellowship together. We have been connecting through online worship, Bible studies, prayer, and fellowship group meetings, where most activities have restarted. It is very encouraging to see some of our senior members and friends who are able to join us in the online worship. We are thankful for many who have helped out to make this possible. To overcome challenges itself is a blessing! God is good in these circumstances!

Rev. Dr. Jack R. Davidson

Covid-19 has affected all of us in more ways than one, but Alhambra True Light is putting in its best effort to continue ministry and stay connected with our community.

Our staff and many volunteers are working to make this transition as smooth as possible for our church. We have transferred nearly all of our ministries to meeting on Zoom, and post our sermons on YouTube.

It is important when we are physically apart that we stay connected and continue to grow in Christ as individuals and together as a community. Physical distance is not easy to overcome, but we are currently making preparations for the time when we can gather together again in the church and worship Him together. The office and pastoral staff are working together to achieve the best possible outcome in regards to safety and worshiping together. We ask for prayer and encouragement as we make preparations to go forward and reconnect with each other and Christ. Thank you.

Update: HIS Group College Fellowship & English Sunday School-Adult EducatioN

So grateful to God! The first week of the Safer at Home Order left me at a total loss, wondering what would happen if our church family couldn’t meet? One week led to two and now five weeks later we see how God provides and reassures us He has His eye on us. He always does and in ways we would not have ever imagined! And I am so thankful to Him!

Trusting God,

Sunday School-Adult Education classes have been meeting faithfully, committed to study God’s Word together. We continue to do so and invite any who wish to join us each Sunday at 10:00am. God has shown that, not only does He have authority over everything (even the Internet), He continues to speak to us through His Word even on Zoom!

HIS College Group “fellowships ” together by Zoom each Friday. Whether it is watching Pastor Jack preach on Good Friday or taking advantage of the many faith building resources available online, we aim to keep our faith growing. All college aged students are welcome to Zoom with us Fridays at 7:30pm.
