Pilgrims of the Earth
What is faith according to the Book of Hebrews? At the beginning of Chapter 11 we are told that it is being sure of the what we hope for and certain of what we do not see (Hebrews 11:1). Faith is believing God’s Word in order to lay hold of what has been promised. Faith is the way we can possess heavenly things while we are here on earth. Two examples given in the chapter are Abraham and Moses. We are not told that Abraham was a resourceful person or that his personality was suited for living as a pilgrim in a strange land. It was his faith. And how did Moses turn his back on the pinnacle of worldly power and riches in order to lead the Hebrews? It wasn’t because Moses was such a great moral person. He did it by faith. As followers of Jesus Christ, like Abraham, we may not feel very resourceful or suited for what God is leading us to do. We may wonder at how God will ever accomplish anything through us! Or, like Moses, the world’s treasures and pleasures may threaten or undermine our spiritual vitality. How will God work through us? How will we be able to identify and resist the worldliness of our time? Not by faith in ourselves, but by faith in Jesus Christ that comes by God’s grace, laying hold of His plan and His purpose for our life.
